Emerging Technologies: Telehealth

International Students, Student Affairs, Student Health, Value-Added Benefits

It’s no secret the world has become heavily reliable on technology, especially our smart phones. With the increase in technological advancements, we are able to do more, conveniently and on the go. Telehealth is one of the ways the health and medical industry is able to stay up to date with these technological advancements.

What is Telehealth?

According to the Center for Connected Health Policy (CCHP) Telehealth is a “collection of means or methods for enhancing health care, public health, and health education delivery and support using telecommunications technologies”. This service spreads across different technologies and can branch from diagnosis to counseling to education. Doctors, nurses, and other health professionals are available 24/7 through the convenience of Telehealth. Essentially, this means no matter where you are, you can call to get answers to your health and medical related questions.

What makes it so popular?

Telehealth has increased the access to healthcare. As long as you have a cellphone or computer with access to internet, you are able to reach a healthcare professional. Whether it is after hours, while traveling, don’t have the time, or don’t feel well enough to get to your doctor, Telehealth could be your solution.

Telehealth is also cost effective. With costs averaging between $40 – $60, it’s cheaper than visiting an emergency room (in non-emergency situations), urgent care, and sometimes doctor’s offices. Student Health Center visits tend to be more cost effective than Telehealth, but after hours, or when the SHC is closed, Telehealth is a good alternative option to have.

What are my Telehealth options?

There are many different options when it comes to choosing a Telehealth mode. The first step would be to check if your current insurance carrier offers a Telehealth service. Most carriers with a Student Sector have a 24/7 Nurse Line, Student Assistance Program, or Teladoc, that you can use to call and talk to a Doctor, Nurse, or Health Professional.

Some also offer “virtual visits” to video chat with these health professionals. Most of these numbers or links are available on your insurance carriers website or on your ID card. If your school’s carrier does not have a Telehealth solution, clients of Academic HealthPlans have access to our 24/7 Nurse Line and AHP Live Care, which are our AHP branded Telehealth solutions.
